No Surprise Act
Your Rights Under the No Surprises Act
Effective January 1, 2022

The No Surprises Act is a federal law designed to protect you from unexpected medical bills, including when working with out-of-network or self-pay providers like private practice therapists.

For therapy, this means you’ll know the cost of services upfront. You’ll receive clear information about fees before starting, so there are no surprises.

What Is a Good Faith Estimate (GFE)?
As part of this law, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) outlining the expected cost of your therapy.
Your GFE will include:
• The estimated cost per session (e.g., $250 per session)
• The projected number of sessions over a set period (e.g., 10 sessions over 3 months)
• The total anticipated cost for that time frame
• Any additional fees (e.g., missed session fees, report writing, legal services)
Your Rights Under This Law
• You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate before your first session.
• You may request an updated estimate at any time during treatment.
• If you are billed $400 or more above your estimate, you can initiate a dispute resolution process through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
• You are not obligated to proceed with care if you do not agree to the estimated costs.

How You’ll Receive Your Estimate
You will receive your personalized Good Faith Estimate as part of your intake paperwork. If your appointment is scheduled at least 10 business days in advance, you’ll receive your estimate within 3 business days of scheduling. If it’s scheduled at least 3 business days in advance, you’ll receive it within 1 business day. In all cases, you’ll receive your estimate before your first session.

It will outline your estimated costs based on your goals and plan of care. If your treatment changes significantly, an updated estimate will be provided.
